 Welcome To Wrightington Hospital Radio

About Joining Wrightington Hospital Radio

We are a small Hospital Radio and are always on the lookout for new volunteers.  There are three main roles at the studio: Presenters (those who go live and present programmes, on their own or with someone else); studio engineers (people who have experience in this field and are able to maintain our radio set-up); and helpers (who usually are around and about supporting those presenting programmes).

You need to be aware that the Trust has a policy of only taking volunteers whose home is in the Wigan Metropolitan area which we must follow.  However, they have agreed to allow Hospital Radio to take volunteers from outside the area provided that they do not apply for travel costs.

We have a small studio which will take up to four people.  Normally there would be two people there: one presents and the other supports.  We have a small entrance area which doubles as our music library for CDs and vinyl.

We usually interview anyone interested in joining us, at a time that is convenient to us and them.

After that, if you are still interested, then you would need to apply to the Trust to become a volunteer.  We will explain this process when we meet.  However, part of the application involves completing a DBS application (formerly CRB), providing two references,  a medical questionnaire has to be completed, finally you will be required to attend an Induction session run by the Hospital Trust.

Once you have been through the Trust application and are badged as a volunteer, then we start the training.

We have a training schedule which is explained in our Training Log.  Training can take varied time.  For some, they pick it up quickly and within a few weeks they are on-air, for others it takes longer.  We need to stress that not everyone who volunteers makes it as a presenter but the majority do.  However, that will be explained in more detail later when you visit the studio.
